Dal Khichdi Recipe | Moong Dal Khichdi | How to make Dal Khichdi– When we think about an easily digestible and wholesome food dish, Dal Khichdi deserves to be on the top of the list. This quick one-Pot meal is full of nutrients and goes well with papad, curd, or raita.
Whenever we go out for holidays and feel heavy after eating outside food for many days, Dal Khichdi comes to our rescue when we are back home. The blend of tomatoes, ginger garlic with routine spice, and ghee tadka make us crave more and more for this comfort food!

Moong Dal Khichdi
Dal Khichdi Recipe | Moong Dal Khichdi | How to make Dal Khichdi – Dal Khichdi is made with rice and lentils. I have used Moong dal in khichdi which is light on the stomach. You can use either moon dal, Toor dal, mix dal, or skinned split green dal. There is an option of substituting white rice with brown rice or broken wheat(Daliya) as well.
Nutrition-
Dal khichdi provides a good amount of carbohydrates and protein as it is made with rice and lentils. I have added fresh methi leaves to it which are good for bone health and are packed with antioxidants.
How to make dal khichdi
Step by step instructions and photos-
For Pressure cooking Dal and Rice
1.Take 1/2 cup yellow moong dal and 1/2 cup rice.
2.Add 3.5 cups of water in the pressure cooker. Let it boil.
3.Rinse dal and rice together well under running water.
4.Add this to the pressure cooker along with 1 tsp salt and 1/2 tsp turmeric powder.
5.Cover the lid of the pressure cooker and let it cook for 8-9 minutes until done. First few minutes on medium to high flame then for few minutes on low flame.
6.In the meanwhile prepare tadka for the khichdi.(Tadka process is given after 9th point of this process)
7.When pressure of the cooker releases naturally, open the lid to check if rice and dal are cooked.If not cooked, add some water and cook again
8. When I opened the lid, dal and rice were cooked and I had to add 11/2 cups of water as the mixture was dried.
9.Turn on the gas after adding the water, let it boil.
For Tadka
- I have chopped ginger garlic together in a chopper. Finely chop 1 onion as well.
2.Heat 2 tbsp Ghee in a pan.In goes 1 tsp of cumin seeds.
3.When it starts crackling add 1/4 tsp asafoetida to it.
4. Further, add finely chopped ginger and garlic to it.
5. When it starts turning golden, add finely chopped onions to it,
6.After sauteing for 2-3 minutes add chopped tomatoes and all the spices to it.
7.When the mixture starts separating oil from sides add finely chopped methi leaves to it.
8.Mix and cook further for 2-3 minutes.
9 .Switch off the gas.
For Moong Dal khichdi
- Now add the tadka to the dal rice mixture, mix well.
2. Cook for few mutes and switch off the gas.
3. Add 3/4 tbsp lemon juice. Further, add 1/2tbsp ghee to it.
4.Your filling and tasty comfort food are ready.

Ingredients
For Pressure cooking Dal and Rice
- 1/2 cup Rice (I have taken long-grain, you can take any type)
- 1/2 cup Yellow Moong dal
- 1 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp Turmeric powder
- 3.5 cups water
- 11/2 cups water to be added after you open the lid of the cooker
For Tadka
- 2 Tbsp Ghee
- 1/2 tbsp Ghee(for pouring over khichdi at the last step)
- 1 Tsp Cumin seeds(jeera)
- 1/4 tsp asafoetida(heeng)
- 5 cloves garlic finely chopped
- 1 inch ginger finely chopped
- 1 onion finely chopped
- 2 Tomatoes chopped
- 3/4 cup methi leaves finely chopped
- 1/2 Tsp Salt or salt to taste
- 3/4 Tsp Kashmiri Red chilli powder
- 1/4 Tsp Turmeric Powder
- 1/2 tsp Corriander powder
- 3/4 Tsp Garam masla
- 1/2 Tsp Cumin Powder
- 3/4 Tbsp Lemon Juice
Instructions
For Pressure cooking Dal and Rice

Notes
- You can adjust the consistency of the khichdi by increasing or decreasing the water added to it.
- Spices can be adjusted as per your taste.
- You can add vegetables of your choice.
