Red sauce pasta recipe | how to make red sauce paste–Red sauce pasta is made by tossing al dente(slightly undercooked) pasta in the red sauce, flavored with herbs and garlic. The pasta looks more tempting and tastes better when the cheese is added to it. The addition of veggies to red sauce pasta is optional. The red sauce can be made with fresh tomatoes or with canned tomatoes as well.
This is a kids’ favorite recipe. Pasta in red sauce with vegetables is a good way to make children eat their favorite dish along with the goodness of veggies.
In this veg pasta recipe in red sauce:
- I have used penne pasta. however, you can use any other pasta also.
- This recipe has the red sauce which is homemade with fresh tomatoes. You have the option of using the canned tomatoes or market bought tomato puree.
- The inclusion of zucchini, bell peppers, and cherry tomatoes has made this red sauce pasta even more appealing apart from increasing the nutritional value of the dish. If you want, you can skip using veggies.
- You can increase the quantity of the cheese as per your wish. I have added grated parmesan cheese for garnishing. However, you can use grated processed cheese also

Tips and Suggestions for making Red sauce Pasta
- Olive oil goes very well with red sauce pasta preparation. However, you are free to use any other oil also.
- Do not skip the addition of mixed herbs/Italian seasoning and finely chopped garlic as these ingredients take the taste to the next level.
- It is advisable to lightly saute the vegetables and maintain their crunch. Crunchy veggies taste better with the pasta apart from making the dish look beautiful.
- The addition of tomato ketchup enhances the red color of the sauce and balance the sourness of the tomatoes so it is highly recommended to add this to the homemade red pasta sauce
How to make red sauce pasta
For Boiling Pasta
1.Boil 6 cups of water in a heavy bottom pan. Add 1/2 tsp oil and 1/2 tsp salt to it. Bring it to a boil.
2. Take 2 cups of Pasta. I have taken Penne pasta, you can take any other pasta also.
3. Further, add pasta to the boiling water.
4. Follow the instructions on the pasta pack to cook them. I cooked the pasta for 8-9 minutes till al dente
5. Drain and rinse well, Sprinkle 3/4 tsp mixed herbs and drizzle 1/2 tsp olive oil on it and mix lightly. Keep it aside till we prepare the red sauce.
For Sauteing Veggies
6.Now heat 1.5 tsp oil in a non-stick pan. Saute zucchini strips, thinly sliced yellow and green bell pepper for 30-40 seconds on high flame. We will not overcook them as we want the veggies to be crunchy. Sprinkle 1/2 tsp mixed herbs on it and stir.
Take them out on a plate.Cut cherry tomatoes into 2 halves, add to the veggies and keep them aside.
For Homemade red pasta sauce
7.Take 7 red tomatoes. Make an “x” cut at the bottom of the tomatoes.
8. Boil 5 cups of water in another heavy bottom pan, add tomatoes to it. Boil till their skin starts separating. I boiled them for 5 minutes. Switch off the gas
9. Remove the skin of the tomatoes. Chop the tomatoes roughly.
Blend these tomatoes to make a puree out of them.
10.Heat 1 tbsp olive oil in a non-stick pan. Saute finely chopped garlic for a few seconds.
11. Add prepared tomato puree to it.
12. Additionally, add 2 tsp mixed herbs.1.5 tsp salt and 1 tsp red chili flakes or 1.5 tsp Kashmiri red chili powder. I prefer adding Kashmiri red chili powder. Cook for 2-3 minutes.
13. Now mix 3 tbsp tomato ketchup to it.
14.stir and cook for another 30-40 seconds.
For Red Sauce Pasta
15. Further, add chopped basil leaves and boiled pasta to it.
16. It is time to add sauteed veggies to it.
17.At the same time add,1/2 tbsp cheese spread and 1 tsp grated parmesan cheese to it. Stir and switch off the gas.
18.Enjoy your delicious red sauce pasta with any drink of your choice.

- 1/4 green bell pepper thinly sliced
- 1/4 yellow bell pepper thinly sliced
- 1/4 green zuccini, cut into strips
- 1/2 tsp mixed herbs/pasta seasoning
- 8 cherry tomatoes cut into 2 halves
