Masala Oats Recipe- Masala oats are the savory version of oats made with onion, tomato, Indian spices, and your choice of additional veggies. There is nothing like starting your day with a nutritious, power-packed vegetable masala oats breakfast with the goodness of veggies and oats.

  • pan or heavy bottom vessel


  • 2 tbsp oil
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • 2 tbsp chopped onion
  • 3 tbsp chopped carrots
  • 3 tbsp chopped cabbage
  • 2 tomatoes
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/8 tsp turmeric powder
  • 3/4 tsp kasmiri red chili powder
  • 1/2 tsp cumin powder
  • 1/2 tsp garam masala powder
  • 3 cup water
  • 3/4 cup old-fashioned rolled oats
  • 1 tsp chopped coriander leaves for garnishing
  • 1 onion (optional for garnishing)


  • Firstly, take 2 tbsp chopped onion (1 onion small), 3 tbsp chopped carrot, 3 tbsp chopped cabbage.
  • Finely chop 2 tomatoes.
  • In a pan, heat 2 tbsp oil and crackle 1 tsp cumin seeds into it.
  • 4. Further, add onion, carrot, and cabbage to the oil. They will not take much time to cook as we have chopped them into small pieces.
  • Saute them for 2-3 minutes. We want some crunch in veggies so will not overcook them.
  • Additionally, add chopped tomatoes to it.
  • Now, add 1 tsp salt,1/2 tsp garam masala powder, 1/2 tsp cumin powder, 1/8 tsp turmeric powder, 3/4 tsp Kashmiri red chili powder to the mixture.
  • Mix and cook until tomatoes turn mushy and oil is separated from the cooked masala.
  • Add 3 cups of water to the masala and bring it to a boil.
  • Take 3/4 cup old-fashioned rolled oats. I have used captain rolled oats. You can use any other brand also.
  • Add rolled oats to the boiling water. Then give it a stir.
  • Continue cooking oats on medium to high flame until oats are cooked with your desired consistency. Keep on stirring in between the process so that oats do not stick at the bottom.
  • Once you get the desired consistency, switch off the gas. Oats tend to absorb some water as you keep it for some time, It tastes the best when served hot.
  • Garnish tasty masala oats with some coriander leaves and onion rings (optional).


  • If you like upma style consistency then you can add less water than specified in the recipe. Whereas if you like khichdi style consistency then consider using some more water for these tasty oats.
  • You can use as many vegetables as you want. spinach, methi, peas will also be the healthy addition to this nutritious and weight loss Indian oats recipe.
  • Rolled oats do not take much time to cook, you can keep the cooked masala ready in the fridge and whenever you feel like having savoury oat, you add the masala to the pan, add water, and oats and cook to relish tasty oats. It is a very convenient way of making masala oats.
